Every year, the United Nations commemorates World Environment Day on June 5. In years past, the UN has called attention to melting ice, deforestation, the need to take care of our deserts; rising oceans…
We get behind every World Environment Day for obvious reasons. But this year, the WED theme really speaks to us: It’s “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.”
This year, the UN is telling us it’s time to pay particular attention to the way we use the limited resources we have.
We’re invited to pledge to share our hopes and aspirations for a good, sustainable future by posting them to social media, and we’ve really enjoyed reading the many different types of ways folks are pledging a more sustainable path ahead for themselves. (Use the hashtag #7billiondreams.)
But we’re also charmed by how many of the dreams we’re seeing, even from the UN’s appointed Goodwill Ambassadors, are a blend of environmental and humanitarian sustainability. For us, that’s the part that hits closest to home.
It’s obvious we’re an environmentally-driven company: our pledge to use reclaimed boatwood and iron from bridges means we’re keeping stuff out of the landfill and finding a way to preserve heritage. But we’re also highly sustainable from the standpoint of the local communities we source our boatwood from. And we make it a point to hire local labor, wherever we can. From beginning to end, ours is a renewable proposition, one that keeps on giving back.
We hope you’ll join us in making a #7BillionDreams pledge. Have a very happy World Environment Day.
